Gap Minder!

We learn a little more everyday. Better if we learn facts and useful things. Accounting has given a appreciation of looking at these no. Sad what it has to say about the Philippines. Hopefully more information can be added.

Game Theory may not be Perfect...

...but It works with Facts, Logic and Reason not Ideologies.

The reason why Objectivists is outdated and obsolete is because and Ideology has to be able to accommodate things that will screw up its fundamental principle. Mathematics and Logic has found a way to look at the world without the intangibility of Philosophical Ideals and working with really hard facts and truths.

Game Theory is for what works, not about a claim that X philosophy will work. Ideologies are ideas conceived in a time and place. They cannot hold true in the test of time and the dynamics of a future no-one can predict. The solution is not a SINGLE ideology but in a "mixed strategy". A of a bit of capitalism, socialism, communism, libertarianism, and a bit of objectivism etc..will be what the a working future will be made off, and not any single DOGMA.

Reality is outside the control of "mere-mortals" and the Audacity to think ONE idea can shape the future of how we achieve the greatest amount of happiness is... (ad hominemly) "Stooopid". This is the realm of "Talkers" and "Dreamers", not those of Action and Reality.

Scientific discipline is about constantly check and recheck information, and base our current theories and definitions in what we can realitvely be certain... ideologies are dreams of what cannot be accurately and certainly be grasped - a future with the greatest amount of happiness possible.

So I would like to say, F*ck ideologies. I have my science and humanity, I figure out a way to make the world work based on HOW IT WORKS, not on some ill-conscived premise by a bitter old woman who suddenly knew how it was to be poor.

Get with the program, I'm a Filipino "Novue Riche" we know how it is to be poor and we live with more poverty than many of the objectivists in their Ivory Towers. We work everyday to fix our country and do you think for a second we it didn't occur to us the Consequences of Objectivist Dogma! We're fucking living in it with the Warlords, Political Dynaisties, Theocracy THATS unchecked power with no one to arbiter it. Thats your freaking Free Market! Everything is for sale here: even Lives, happiness and freedom.

Get your hands dirty and try to save the world... oh wait Objectivists don't do that! They don't help others, even if it will serve their long term self interest. Tsk... yeah, they talk dirty but its just an excuse to shirk the inevitable effort and let everyone else do the work.

Its not a philosophy its a crusade to justify any self interest... just like ANY other philosophy and theology. They just lash out of their critics but have no intention do anything about it (a dominant strategy, they are at equilibrium at being douches).

Well I have to admit, living that delusion is kinda tempting. It is just so easy to give up on people. Thankfully the SCIENCE says the inevitable is clear and present, and these guys are just another example of Tragedy of the Commons. When we fix the world, they'll try to take the credit: afterall sitting on their asses counts as Work to Objectivists.

Objectivists and Game Theory

I'm fighting the GIANT: Delusion + Misplaced Altruism + Dogmatism Modernized in the Guise of Objectivism.

Game Theory and Objectivism

The recent release of the movie "A Beautiful Mind" raises some questions regarding the efficacy of the work done by Nobel laureates John F. Nash, John C. Harsanyi, and Reinhard Selten. Their work involved the analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games. Do you know of any written analysis of this work from an objectivist perspective?

Answered by William Thomas

As such, Nash's contributions to non-cooperative game theory were a major breakthrough in the formal analysis of strategic interaction. Any interaction among individuals is fundamentally "non-cooperative," because each person's interests are distinct and each person decides as an individual. Even cooperation is "non-cooperative" in this sense. Nash's equilibrium concept, which is essentially that if one seeks to maximize one's benefit one should choose based on how one expects other parties to react, is valid in its field.

Certain conclusions from simplified game models, of which the most notorious has been the "prisoner's dilemma" one-shot game, have been abused by social philosophers and political scientists to advocate collectivism of various stripes. But a game is only as good as the model it represents, and Nash's work is not at fault for providing the tool that has been abused.

A short answer, but one that will be my Key hurdles in breaking this Monster. If you don't know what Objectivism is, then you should start by learning who Alan Greenspan is. If you remember the name, he was the guy that created the Housing Bubble using Objectivist Doctrine of "Totally Free Market without Regulation". If you think the economy is recovering, note that several trillions of debt and the inability to pay off that debt in generations is what that got all of us.

Now on to this little piece of work. The guy doesn't answer the question. He basically says that that Nobel Prize winning work is a "Conspiracy" Ooooo!!! Conspiracy! (its better if you give make it sound like haunted drone).

And proceeds too... do nothing. Yes, that's how you discredit a Proven Theory and TONS and TONS of math that disprove your point, by ignoring it.

Ok this highlights one of my key problems, people who don't understand what game theory is and making broad stroke judgments the way they have been making broad stroke judgements with regards to capitalism.

I don't plan to read all of the Objectivist BS. I plan to focus one one Crucial Aspect of its: Its erroneous premise. The same premise that deregulated the Banks of america and created this cycle of abuse.

Dumb assess... they got their chance and they screwed up, how can they justify it? Oh wait their delusional...

Why is it All the Major Players of the Objectivist Movement except Alan Greenspan are not experts in Economics? Alan Greenspan screwed up royally - his ideas are wrong and yet... Objectivists still push their cause.

Misty Morning

Distractions and Reflections

I finished TTC's Game Theory Lectures by Scott P. Stevens. It was a balanced lecture, although I had to listen to it because I only had time in the 2 hours drive back and forth work and school. I've finished Phili-gaging (Philosophy and Gags; Plato and a Platypus walk into a Bar). I am moving to "On Bull-Shit", a Comedy Philosophy Audio book (I really need something to keep me awake on the drive home). Letting my mind wander, tends to lead it into internal circles, which leads to depression.

There is a lot of recomended reading in the Game Theory lectures I will get my hands on. I will start with the most relevant: Coopetition, then Game Theory and Economic Behavior and move on to what ever is more relevant to what I'm doing. This is competing with my other Interests, which I will try to find time to for like: History/Gaming, Poverty, and Overpopulation.

I noticed I've chosen many of the things I'm doing because: no one else will take it on and I believe that someone's gotta do it. So that and all the other responsibilities at work (among which I have to fix our plant's efficiency or my fellow countrymen will have their jobs given to China) are making up all the clutter in my head. Its the same problem I ended up with in my Thesis: I did everything, juggled to many things, and can't seem to delegate.

Thus I'm writing this trying to analyze my distractions.

When the lecture ended, something really frightening occured: I realized, as a entrepreneur/businessman, I had to apply and experiment with the concepts provided NOW! I shouldn't sit on my ass with the knowledge, I have to use them in my projects (instead of using the tactics in arguments, which i have been doing). (Use or Lose it!)

Then there are my advocacies. They are distracting, because I can be very single-minded and there are so many important things I feel like I have to do. The truth is, I can only do one thing at a time and have to leave the rest my "remains", which pissess me off. When I feel something is important and my attention tends to narrow to a fine point and I tend to throw at it an amount of energy and effort usually beyond sustainable levels (wastefully).

I cannot do just charge off whenever the Pope throws a crusade. I have to pace myself, and time my action. I have to get a good grip and control over my passions and be entirely consious of my "End Game". I have to build a strategy around my weaknesses and time my "release". Right now the not so important things feel more important to me because they provide immediate catharsis like interaction and positive affirmation.

***

Lately I've been feeling mis-aligned and somewhat robotic (while I'm totally anti-Substance Dualism, I won't got on to make a spiritual analogy). When something gets to me, it affects everything because it is #1 in my consiousness and it affects many of the decisions, including the small ones. My application of what I've learned coupled with my limited capacities, makes me choose a strategy that exercises constantly what I've learned until it has become a conditioned response.

This is why, my Atheism is a big step forward. Working on an empirical premise and conditioning a rational approach to every situation is the same as training a military specialist to expect an enemy in any blind corner. An "powerful" automated response that takes advantage of initative and is well practiced (meaning it can get even more potent).

This automated response lets me free up my mind to thinking of things that are more pleasant and reduce my stress. Unfortunately, sometimes I can get lost and confused when I "awaken" in the middle of my rational routine. This leaves me confused a bit as I let the lingering patterns finish itself or get to confused to finish my train of thought. Add this to my low tollerance for stress because of my poor health and very comfortable upbringing, (another challenge for another time when I have the answers) and I'm practically Lost.

Like when I'm writing and distracted by my fundamental views which I keep repeating like the Power Puff Girls Antagonist Mojo Jojo.

Ack... the limitations of working with an average intelligence. If I only had more people I can depend on to help me with my work: like my sibs.

My Sibs, now that's a whole other can of worms. I need them but I can't make them part of the solution because I want them to want to do it (in other words, happy). Its a such a waste of resources because who else would have the same genetic and cultural disposition as my self and be able to take on the very problem "someone" like me can handle. Mom and Dad had 5 of us and out of all of them I'm the only one left, it kinda sucks.

I would rather share the company with them, I don't want all of this. I don't need much to live comforably. I'm very happy with Philippine middle class sources of catharsis.

On Art.
Artists who materialize Ideas for the sake of seeing them work instead of an audience, missed their true callings as scientists, engineers and technicians. When i was talking to my little sister about her art, I came to realize more about our own reasons and how come it was highly compaitble with Science.

There is that quest for truth and tangibility in whatever fills our heads. We want it out there in the real world, NOT because of an Audience, but because we want to see if it could work. We want the perspective of a working model and see the limitations we cannot see inside our own minds.

I realize I write for those same reasons. I got to drawing intiatially for those reasons: to have my ideas work the same way I saw it in my head.

It was also in art I learned about symbolism and how our minds converts things to symbols which gets in the way of Realistic Drawing. you have to actively prevent your mind from seeing the symbols and representation your brain creates for you and see the lines and shadows as they really are.

My art is an expression of the truth I've been looking for... not a "Truth" or "idea" I want to communicate.

On the other hand: Mahadlika is my art. It is an Idea I want to communicate. As it is so heavily and thoroughly researched, I've invested a lot in digging up truths I can prove and show others.

I guess after you get the Truth, what you do with it becomes Art.

Steak Experiment

Angus Serloin costs around Php3000 $60 a Kilo here.
I got some Local TBones (Del Monte) for Php500 or $10 a Kilo.
1 inch cuts, 2mins per side per cut.
5 mins rest

We bought Angus Serloin at Php1600 at 500gm. We cooked it at 2mins per side and it ended up rare. We had to try again and added more salt. this time about a less than minute each side for medium well and a bit more salt.

Gravy was just its fat :P.

Tbone was 2.5mins per side. It was medium well to well done. It was noticeably tougher and not as much flavor.

Next time 3mins per side (after thawing) for the Angus. For the T-bone 2mins would be enough.

Substance Dualism

You know what this is? This is a STFU to Pilosopos.

Having Some fun with Physics

Posted it here instead of my GMing blog because I just wanted to fool around with the math even if I may be wrong.

My original Post

Using human proportions to get Arm length (based on 175cm or 5'9"). X2 length to get the diameter of the arc the arm moves to raise 20lbs overhead = 6ft arc (assuming a closed fist). 6ft x 20lbs x 1 sec.

So does ST10 = a work of 120 ft*lb per second?
is my math right in calculating 162 joules/sec?

How does one measure the work of Movement?
How does one solving for FP using work using Running or Paced Running formula?
Can Work be used as a more definitive measure of FP and actions that consume FP?

The Reply

It's a game, an abstraction.

You're overthinking it.

Forget about system, keep working on your interesting setting, where attention to detail makes things more fun ;)

Thanks for the compliment :)

I've been bothered about a more tangible way to measure FP. Given all the data available you can get online about soldiers and athletic performance, I got really curious about the physics involved.

Using this Calorie Counting website I've tried to break down the following:

Hiking (per hour), Paced Running (per Minute), and Running (per 15sec) are the most available precedent of judging effort or work.

Hiking 2miles an hour 202lbs is 712 calories or 2.8KWatts*h
Paced Running 1min is 13 calories or 52 Watts*s
Running 15seconds 5.5 calories or 22 Watts

I think I'm missing a way to measure intensity?

Its just a curiosity. Its always bugging me that there could a be a more exacting way to measure work and would be grateful with any input.

ST 10 allows doing 120 ft-lb of work in one second. It doesn't allow doing that much every second in a continual manner.
Swinging a sword at about 162 joules basically boils down to about 162/1.35kg or 120m/s (270mph). Only traveling an arc of 2m, that would be 1/60th of a second? At 162 joules a leverage damage is 1d+1 cr (heavy wooden sword).

compared to a golf ball that travels 180mph, a tennis ball is capable of 150mph.

Increasing the mass to a 5lb round mace (traveling at the same speed) is 270joules at roughly 1d+2cr. ST12 can generate speeds of up to 172m/s or 388J with a 5lb mace (2dcr). 388J being able to penetrate DR7 15C Plate with a Flanged Mace (sw+3cr) one handed emphasizes to one's imagination the amount of force needed to penetrate.

Playing with the math, generating as much as 388J is like grabing a 1.5kg tennis ball and tennis smashing at something at 155mph.

Another Mount and Blade Review.

Describing it, and understanding the Niche. Also understanding the success is important.
